The Mediterranean Multi-Programme Mechanism (MMM)
Overview
A pilot coordination initiative to create synergies in the Mediterranean area by bringing together Interreg Programmes.
Launched in 2022, the The Mediterranean Multi-Programme Mechanism (MMM) helps enhance long-term impacts and transferability of projects results across the Mediterranean region. Through capitalization of knowledge, best practice and project results, the Mechanisms aims at optimizing the impact of instruments, policies, strategies, and action plans. The MMM aims to strengthen transnational collaboration through structured governance, while maintaining a light impact on projects and Programmes. Its ultimate goal is the establishment of a broader community, able to generate dialogue, cohesion, and convergence of objectives, which are functional to the transfer of results and the creation of a legacy for future generations.
Main objectives:
- improve coordination between actors by jointly monitoring and evaluating the impact of successful practices and innovative solutions tested at the local level. This action is crucial both for creating new synergies and for scaling-up results
- strengthen Interreg’s policy recommendations by improving the quality and impact of interventions in the regions
Thematic Focus: Sustainable tourism
The MMM focuses on one of the main topics common to all Mediterranean countries: sustainable tourism. Tourism is one of the driving sectors in the area, accounting 35% of all international tourist arrivals and generating 30% of global tourism revenues. At the same time, the Mediterranean is also a climate change hotspot, warming 20% faster than the global average. Given the attractiveness of the area combined with the impact of the climate crisis, the Mediterranean area needs a systemic change, starting from tourism management. The MMM aims to organize joint activities to foster a policy change and a more massive shift toward sustainable tourism.
