ADRIPASS shows a roadmap for improving connectivity in the Adriatic-Ionian region

Mar 16, 2021 | Adrion Short Stories

The ADRIPASS project looks at the weaknesses of maritime – hinterland connections in the Adriaic-Ionian area to analyse the physical and non-physical – bottlenecks along the Trans-European Transport Networks (TEN-T) corridor sections. The focus is specifically on the corridors (Orient/ East-Med and Mediterranean) that have been indicatively extended to the Western Balkans region.

What is a Port Community System (PCS) and why it is so important?

ADRIPASS has targeted its pilot actions on the improvement of the PCS in several ports of the Adriatic-Ionian region. The set of activities put in place will help have more efficient cargo flow at ports as well as better connectivity in the Region. Let’s discover why.

A Port Community System refers to an open and neutral platform that connects multiple systems, thus enabling the secure and intelligent exchange of information between the different organizations that make up a seaport community. It is a shared platform that is organized and used by public and private stakeholders (shipping lines, logistics providers, terminal operators, wharehuse operators, etc. The secure and intelligent exchange of information makes it possible to optimize, manage and automate port and logistics processes, making for an efficient process that enhances the competitive position of air and seaport communities.

ADRIPASS has helped improve the PCS in several ports of the Adriatic-Ionian region, see the cases of the port of Koper, the port of Igoumenitsa and the port of Bar.

The case study of the Port of Koper

The Port of Koper was ranked 80th and since 2006, when the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) began publishing the list, it has been classified in the highest position compared to other Adriatic ports. Today, the Port of Koper holds a 40% share of container traffic in the northern Adriatic and is the largest terminal in the region. In 2019, they plan to reach a historic milestone – a throughput of 1 million TEUs.

Presented in Koper the EDIFACT CENTER system co-developed with the financial contribution of ADRIPASS
