5th Edition of the Istanbul Environment Friendly City Award: Celebrating Sustainability in the Mediterranean
- OrganiserThe Istanbul Environment Friendly City Award is financially supported by the Government of Türkiye through a voluntary contribution to the UNEP/MAP Programme of Work and Budget. This initiative is technically supported by MedCities. Promotion and communication are supported by INFO/RAC and MedCities with the collaboration of MCSD members and other UNEP-MAP strategic partners.
As a key initiative of the Mediterranean Strategy for Sustainable Development (MSSD), the Award is gaining increasing recognition, highlighting Mediterranean cities and municipalities committed to sustainable urban development. It showcases inspiring examples that can motivate other mayors across the region, encouraging the replication of successful practices.
The Award aims to encourage local authorities to advance towards a more environmentally friendly future, serve as role models to inspire other cities, and raise public awareness about environmental quality in urban areas.
The 5th edition of the Award was launched on 29 November and will be open for applications until mid-April 2025.
Municipalities interested in applying can do so through the official webpage, where they will find a detailed description of the application process here.
A dedicated helpdesk is available for support, and an online info-day will be organized soon. The date and draft agenda will be published on the application webpage.
The Award will be presented to the winning municipality during the 24th Meeting of the Contracting Parties to the Barcelona Convention and its Protocols (COP 24), which will take place in Cairo, Egypt, from 2-5 December 2025.
